Help with User names and Passwords

From MiniWiki

Jump to: navigation, search

The MOT web site supports both a mailing list and a Wiki. User names and passwords are kept completely separately in those two systems - you have to create accounts in both places - so changing one doesn't change the other.

New members

Every member will want to be on our mailing list - anyone can read information on our Wiki. Some people will also want to add to the Wiki - it's just like Wikipedia. Anyone can edit it - but unlike Wikipedia, you have to create an account first. You can use the Wiki to store photos to share with the group, to write about great places to drive really small cars, to add technical information to advertise cars or parts for sale or to include news and events.

Adding yourself to our mailing list

  1. Go to this page.
  2. Fill in your email address, the name you'd like to be known by and pick a password.

Adding yourself to our Wiki

You can read the Wiki without a user name - but if you'd like to be able to edit it too, you'll need one.

  1. Visit any Wiki page (the one you are looking at right now will do).
  2. Click on "Log in/Create Account" in the top-right corner of the page.
  3. Click on "Create an Account"
  4. Pick a user name and a password. Giving your real name and your email address is optional - HOWEVER if you ever forget your password and the system doesn't know your email address, it can't email your password to you - so I STRONGLY recommend that you do that.
  5. Once you've done that and logged in, you can edit most of the pages on the Wiki. A few (such as the main page) are protected. There are instructions on how to write pages for Wiki. For practice, you could create yourself an entry in the MOT Membership List.

What to do if your email address changes

As with most things on the Internet, it's much easier to change your details before your old email address stops working! With that in mind, here is how to change your email details:

For the Mailing List

To change your email details for the MOT mailing list:

  1. Go to this page.
  2. At the bottom of the page where it says "Mot Subscribers" enter your old email address into the box at the very bottom and click "Unsubscribe or edit options"
  3. That takes you to a screen where you can type in your password and click on "Log in".
    • If you have forgotten your password, you can click on the "Remind" button and it'll email your password to you. It can only email it to your old address of course.
    • If you've forgotten your password AND you can't read mail sent to the old address anymore then you have a serious problem! The best thing to do in that case is to just create a new account. The old one will (presumably) 'bounce' email sent to it - and eventually the mailing list software will delete the old account.
  4. So, once you're logged in, you should be at a screen where it gives you a bunch of options - including changing your email address. You have to enter your new address in twice (to make sure you don't make a typo) and make sure your real name is correct before hitting "Change My Address and Name". The "Change globally" checkbox would apply the change to all of our mailing lists if MOT had more than one - but we don't).
  5. You can also change your password the same way using the boxes a bit further down the page.
  6. There are a bunch of other options you can play with further down the page.

For the MOT Wiki

To change your details on the MOT Wiki:

  1. Look in the top-right corner of this page (or any other MOT Wiki page for that matter).
    • If it says "Log in/Create account" then click on there and it'll ask you for your user name and password. Both user name and password are case-sensitive and may contain spaces.
    • If you have forgotten your Wiki username then you can search the complete list of users, (Click here!)
    • If you have forgotten your Wiki password then if you set up your email address in your "preferences" then you can have the password emailed to there.
    • If you've forgotten your password AND you can't read mail sent to the old address anymore - or if you set up your Wiki account without giving an email address then you have a serious problem! There is no way for even the system operator to fix that! If that happens, the only way out is to create a new account on the Wiki - set up a new username, new password and set up your email address in the preferences. There isn't even a way for me to delete the old account.
  2. So, one way or another, you are now logged into the Wiki and at the top-right of the window, it'll show your user name and there will be a button marked "preferences" - click on that and it'll take you to a screen where you can enter your email address, change password, etc.
